Want to improve your search rankings? This is my "SEO for Beginners" guide with 10 tips for where to start:
1. Make sure you know what keywords you want to rank for. Make a shortlist and maybe research them using online keywords research tools.
2. Look at your site: work out the theme of each page and hence what words each page should be optimised for.
3. For each page, ensure that your keywords are in the Title tag, Header tags, meta data, anchor text and bold text. Use variations of your keyword and don't overdo it.
4. Ensure your internal linking structure is strong. Maybe include a breadcrumb trail so that your user can navigate back a step at any stage. Make sure all pages have a link to "home".
5. Use a simple directory structure - don't have pages that are serveral directories deep.
6. Make sure your pages are W3C validated so that the search engines can find all of your content.
7. Add a sitemap. You can add an HTML sitemap for your human users and an XML sitemap for the search engines.
8. Ensure you keep updating your site with new content - search engines love regularly updated content. A blog is a good way to frequently update your site.
9. Get inbound links to your site. The best way to do this is by adding quality content to your site - people link to things they find useful.
10. Check your file size. If it's too big it might take a while to load and the search engines won't site around and wait - neither will you users.
