Design your web site around what your business offers. That sounds like a basic criteria most companies would naturally follow, but frequently we talk with businesses and review their sites only to find that what they told us were keywords, did not correspond to the content on the site.
Another issues is all flash sites. Some businesses or graphic designers still think that a "Flashy Site" is the way to impress visitors and sell their image/services. With little to no text for the search engine bots to read, those sites oftentimes get "lost" online. If no one but your graphic designer finds your site-flash means nothing. Balance your site with high quality, original content. Remember, "Content is King" when it comes to Search Engine Optimization.
When you are editing or writing content, be sure to focus your content on your customer, but focus on one topic (keyword phrase) per page when possible. Your keywords should include that topic (keyword phrase). Everything on this page should be focused on that topic. This will prove to the search engines that your page is about that topic. The page will then be very relevant for the topic but it will also be valuable for the customer. If the customer gets the information they are looking for when they perform the search, you are more likely to get their business.
