?Hark? I hear you say, ?Is that Joe back from his travels??, well yes actually fresh out of the keyword research wilderness with some great news about streamlining keyword research, ?oooooh? I hear you say (like the ?ooo? people use when watching fireworks) ?do tell us about it Joe?. Well ok I will:

My keyword tool of preference is without a doubt Keyword Discovery; it has a couple of nifty features that have helped me produce some great keyword list in a relatively short period of time recently. The tips below are particularly good when completing some fresh keyword research around an ineffective keyword list or a keyword list that has not reached its full potential to be more exact.

Keyword discovery has a ?project? section, which allows the user to create a project, in which keywords discovered can be added. Keyword discovery is particularly helpful when entering one keyword at a time as it also supplies associated keywords and their scores. I used to use the ?import? function, and to some extent this is good for analysing a list of keywords, but it does not supply any other keywords and only ?scores? the imported keywords.

The method of keyword analysis I use is as follows:

  1. Create a project

  1. Type in individual keywords (do not import)

  1. Add any keywords you want to the project (by clicking the box by the keyword and then clicking the ?add? command)

  1. When you have exhausted your keyword list, click on the project to review your keywords

  1. Analyse all your keywords, by clicking the analyse button

  1. Highlight the keywords and click the analyse button again to get the KEI scores (you will have to go through each page to analyse the keywords)

  1. Click the export button and save as an Excel spreadsheet

  1. Voila! You have a really solid list of keywords to review at your leisure, in relation to customers I tend to also include the original keyword list (if it is a fresh analysis) so they can see the comparison, I also add a word document to explain the different headers of the Excel spreadsheet so the customer has all the information to make an informed decision.

So there you are, it?s been a while coming but worthwhile I feel, a gem from the crazy world of keyword research!
