How long does it take for 301 redirects to transfer PageRank?
Tue, 20 Feb 2007 10:13:53 by Pete Handley

As many people who work in or around SEO, or who own website may know, the correct method for transfering the PageRank of one page to another is through the use of the 301 redirect.

We all know that using a 302 redirect can cause no end of problems for transfering this, but this often seems the standard method with hosting companies as well as many web designers who are ignorant of SEO.

However, once the redirect was put in place, the next thing we all wonder about, is when will the transfer be complete. Anyone who has used this method will know that it is not an instant process, and that it can seem to take months.

Recently we had an answer to this question, when Google's Adam Lasnick said on a Google Groups thread:

"301s pass PR and related signals appropriately. Usually takes a couple of weeks for things to smooth out, though."

Experience tells me that this is perhaps an optimistic view of how quickly this process will be completed, however it is good to be able to put some kind of time frame on it
